It has been the conventional view that DNA is locked and unchanging except for inheritable defects, and that only the specific arrangement of chromosomes carries information down through the generations, such that nothing an individual does during their lifetime will be biologically passed on to their children. This view is now cast into doubt with the discovery of epigenetics, a hidden code within the gene structure that is revealing new insights into the true nature of the human genome.
